This morning my 2 boys and I headed out on a road trip to try and catch a glimpse of Space Shuttle Discovery making her final flight into Dulles National Airport. she was riding piggyback on Nasa’s enormous 747.

We pulled into VA and traffic was at a standstill. All parking lots were full and we thought we were done. I went 2 exits past the airport and pulled over into an industrial office complex (to let me boys use the car potty). As I was getting the car potty set up, Dylan, my 4 year old, says “Hey Daddy…….look at that!” I turned around to see Discovery on approach. I grabbed my camera, dialed in my exposure in about 1 tenth of a second and snapped off a few frames. This one is being printed and going in my boys room.

It was a long drive but so worth it. My boys played with their Matchbox Space Shuttles the entire way home icon smile Space Shuttle Discovery | Final Flight

Last weekend my wife and I spend 2 days in Washington DC. We had heard that the cherry blossoms were near peak so were excited to get out there and see them.

The day we arrived, a series of thunderstorms moved into the area and knocked many of the blossoms out of the trees before we could see them but we did not let that stop us. We headed out on Sunday morning for a few hours and found a few trees that were still looking beautiful.

Here are a few photos from our recent trip to Washington DC……I can’t wait to go back there this fall!

Here is part 2 of my Yosemite National Park photos.

All photos were taken with a Pentax 67 medium format film camera.

The first image was take from the parking lot of Bridal Veil Falls. During spring, when the falls are at 100%, you get this gorgeous rainbow at the base of the falls during the late afternoon.

A big spring flood left these pools of water. The next morning when the storm had passed, everything was perfectly still, giving me a great opportunity to take this reflection image.

During a winter storm, the snow and fog made for a very moody image near Bridal Veil Falls.

An October fire left the Yosemite valley filled with smoke. I drove up to tunnel view before the sun came up to grab this photo. This image won first place in the Lake Tahoe Community College art show. The title is “Fire’s Beauty”.

The moon was rising over Bridal Veil Falls just before the sun went down. This was the last photo I took before I left the park.

Welcome to Thomas Beaman Photography. I am keeping this blog post at the top of the page because I want new visitors to learn who I am without having to scroll through pages of archives.

While I am experienced with many different styles of photography, I specialize in wedding day storytelling. I love telling the unique story of a wedding using images with emotion and expression.

Couples spend over a year planning their wedding and I make sure to pay attention to every single detail and photograph them in an artistic way.

I love keeping portrait sessions between the bride & groom, bridal party and families very relaxed. I want the true personalities of my clients to show in these photographs. I want you to look back at these images in 20 years and say “that was so us!”

Please view the slideshow above to see a few of my favorite images. I am also going to share a few thoughts from my previous clients.

Yosemite National Park is one of the most amazing places to photograph. I have spent many days walking around this park with my camera and I always come away with stunning images.

Summer is the most popular time of the year in the park but I prefer to photograph in spring, winter and fall.

Here are a few of my favorite photographs (there were too many to post in one blog post so check back to see part 2 and part 3…..probably part 4 and 5 too)

One of the most famous views in Yosemite is Tunnel View (made famous by Ansel Adams)

The Merced River flows through Yosemite Valley and it has many different looks depending on when you are there. Here is the river during a spring flood.

Here is the river during the fall. The orange and yellow hues were caused by a major wildfire burning just outside of the park. The sun was trying to break through the thick smoke which turned everything bright yellow and orange (I have a photo taken at sunrise on this smokey day that I will share in my next Yosemite blog post).

And here is the river in winter taken from the same place as the photo above (just zoomed in a bit).

Winter mornings in Yosemite are amazing! Here is a shot of El Capitan with early morning fog.

Here is a wide angle from the same location. I took this on my Fuji G617 panorama film camera. There was no guessing with this camera…..you only got 4 shots with a roll of 120 film (I used Fuji Velvia 50 slide film) so you had to make them count.

This photo scared me a bit. I was photographing this deer with a 100-300mm lens. He was walking around the park eating and minding his own business. He kept getting closer and finally I was only at 100mm and this is as wide as I could get. He looked and stared at me for about 15 seconds. We were pretty close to each other and I kept picturing one of those antlers coming at me………..I never enlarged this photo but I would like to make a big print someday.

I have a few other landscape photography posts on my blog. Here is one from Lake Tahoe.

These were up on my old blog but did not get transferred when I moved everything over.

Growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area was amazing. I have lived in many different areas including Lake Tahoe, Southern California, Las Vegas and Pennsylvania but nothing can compare to Northern CA.

Here are a few of my favorite images taken between San Francisco and Big Sur (All images except the black and white Golden Gate Bridge image were photographed using an old Pentax 67 film camera with Fuji Velvia 50 slide film).

These first images were taken from the Marin Headlands on the north side of the bridge. The night shots were 2 minute exposures. It took about 20 tries at each location because it was tough to do a 2 minute exposure without having wind gusts………..it was frustrating but expected.

Wedding season is almost here so I wanted to squeeze in a few more travel posts before April.

Hiking around places like Monument Valley at sunrise by yourself is an amazing feeling. There is not a sound from another person. It’s pretty much you and your thoughts. It is probably one of my favorite things about doing landscape photography.

All of these photographs were taken with medium format film cameras (a Pentax 67 and a Fuji 617 panorama camera). I use 100% digital for my weddings but I still love to play around with film cameras when it comes to landscapes and nature.

Here are some of my favorites from:

Monument Valley – Forrest Gump filmed the scene of Tom Hanks running at sunrise here.

Antelope Canyon – This was the only place that I was not alone………it is on The Navajo Indian Reservation so the only way in or out of the canyon is to get a ride from one of The Native Americans who own a really cool 4-wheel drive.

Bryce Canyon – This was an amazing place. Up at about 9000 feet, you start at the top of the canyon and hike down……….hiking back out with all of my camera gear was tiring to say the least.

Zion National Park – Reminded me of Yosemite but bright red.

Hope you enjoy the photos!

This morning my family and I took a drive over to The Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area in PA. After taking the short hike to the viewing area, we were standing in front of 60,000 snow geese, Canadian geese and tundra swans. What an amazing experience (especially for our 2 little boys).

When the snow geese took off, it sounded like a jet flying over you…………….I can’t wait to experience that again!
